Our Story

Giving thanks for the past...

Our history in Cheney has been a long one with the first group of Methodists meeting in dwellings and school houses. On August 19, 1884 this church started building their first church and completed it November 29, 1884 and started holding Sunday school, naming itself the First Methodist Episcopal Church. As the town of Cheney grew, this early group of Christians shared their building with the Trinity Reformed Church until their church was finished May 30, 1885. In 1913, the church built a second church. In 1980, the building we meet in now was completed, retaining the beautiful stained glass windows from the previous building. In 2022, we completed a significant addition to our space, adding a larger Fellowship center, new kitchen and classrooms.

Seeking God's Vision...

In 2025, we began exploring together what it would mean to expand our vision as a Christ-centered church for the community of Cheney. As many Cheney families were driving into Wichita to attend church, we saw the need for change. While we are deeply grateful for our rich Methodist roots, the congregation felt led to become a non-denominational community church for Cheney. It is our goal to build on our deep Wesleyan roots, and become a Spirit-filled, Life-giving church for the whole community.

Looking ahead...

We are still discerning where God would lead us. Our goal is to serve the community of Cheney, and to be a vibrant local church where everyone can grow to know Jesus personally and deepen their walk with Him. We want to be a church that serves all ages and stages of life, and a transformative presence in this wonderful town that we love.
